Sex:Modesty/Purity...

Lists of Resources to help your children learn about modesty, chatisty, the birds & the bees, pornography, finding your spouse, and marriage prep (and other related topics).

When to introduce these important truths to your child is a very personal decision for each family. What we have learned is that if you live in a homeschool "bubble'" then maybe you can postpone a little bit longer and preserve the innocence. But often, when children are exposed to others that have already been exposed to this sensitive information it may prove wise to pre-empt with the beautiful teaching of the Catholic Church at a younger age. It's often much better to share the truth, goodness, and beauty of God's design for marital love then to allow your children to learn of it in a funny or crude manner.
We often learned the hard way... at Boy Scouts, private and public school, sports, lude writing on playground, etc. It's hard in today's culture! Know who your kids are hanging out with and work on open communications with your children.

Modesty

  • Book for pre-teens: Beautiful Girlhood
Offers gentle guidance for preteen and teenage girls on how to become a godly woman. Full of charm and sentiment, it will help mother and daughter establish a comfortable rapport for discussions about building character, friendships, obedience, high ideals, a cheerful spirit, modest dress, a pure heart, and a consecrated life. There is a nice devotional/workbook we have used with it, as well.

  • Book: Listen, Son - 12 heart-to-heart talks to be given by Dad to his boys and young men about the mysterious processes of reproducing life. Presents timeless supernatural attitude in accord with Catholic principles. Graduated structure in three parts: ages 9-13; 14-16; 16-19. Suggestions for preserving purity.
  • Book: Charity and Sex and the Young Man - The frankest book ever written for teenage boys Fr. Herbert Raterman was confessor and spiritual guide in a Cincinnati Jesuit prep school for many years. He developed a course on women and sex for teenage boys and their fathers, and spoke to them by the thousands. This small book repeats that course, treating the most delicate subjects with plain talk -- topics mothers simply cannot raise with their growing sons and many fathers, understandably, find difficult to discuss, masturbation principally among them.

  • Book: His Brain, Her Brain  This book is fascinating! Men and women are so different.

  • Book: Wild at Heart: Discovdering the Secret of a Man's Soul, John Eldredge (Christian). Eldredge provides a look inside the true heart of a man and gives men permission to be what God designed them to be—dangerous, passionate, alive, and free.
  • Book: Captivating: A Guided Journal to Aid in Unveiling the Mystery of a Woman's Soul  (Christian) from the same author as previous book, but about women. "Every little girl has dreams of being rescued by the hero, of being swept away into a great adventure, of being the beautiful princess. Sadly, when women grow up, they are taught to be tough, efficient, and independent. Many Christian women are tired, struggling under the weight of the pressure to be a "good servant," a nurturing caregiver, passionate lover, or capable home manager."
  • Book for the Ladies: Fascinating Womanhood - Treat your man like a king, he'll treat you like a queen. This is tried and true. Oh, and if you throw this book across the room out of frustration with what Helen Andelin is telling you, you won't be the first.
